DeLand Mural Walk

We invite you to take a leisurely stroll through our historic district to view the 15 murals that make up the DeLand Mural Walk. When Henry DeLand traveled through the rolling hills, pine woods, and orange groves to arrive here in March, 1876, he had a vision. He foresaw a charming city that would become a cultural and educational mecca – the “Athens of Florida.”

The DeLand Mural Committee of the MainStreet DeLand Association also had a vision: Why not take people on an historical stroll – a Mural Walk – that would unfold along our streets like the pages of a giant book? Thus began the DeLand Historic Mural Walk.

There is a universal fascination with history, and the DeLand Mural Walk is the creative showcase commemorating the city’s bygone days. The murals can be seen as a history lesson when viewed in chronological order. Each mural tells a story on its own, vividly portraying the arrival of Henry DeLand, the great St. Johns River, steamboats, statesmen, wildlife, old hotels, the Spanish sugar mill, and many more moments, places, and characters from our community’s past.
